David Brown and his son, Joseph R. Brown founded this firm in 1833 making it one of the oldest, if not one of the most important precision machine tool builders. When Joseph R. Brown became partners with Lucien Sharpe in 1853, the company became the Brown & Sharpe Mfg. Company. They made the its first milling machine in 1861 followed by its first universal grinding machine in 1868. The company continued to grow and manufacture machine tools until selling their machine tool division to DeVlieg-Bullard in the 1980's and then acquired by Bourn & Koch in 2004. They are now the OEM for Brown & Sharpe.

Bourn & Koch supports the Brown & Sharpe machines with parts, service, manuals, rebuilds, and retrofits. Some of the used Brown & Sharpe machine models supported include their Surface Grinders, Micromasters, Visual Grinders, Valumasters, Microstatic Cylindrical Grinders, Universal Grinders, Universal and Tool Grinding, Valumaster Universal Grinding, Visual Grind Cylindrical Grinding, Tool & Cutter Grinders, Face Grinders, Plain Grinders, Machining Centers, Turr-E-Tape Drills, Milling Machines, Dynamaster Milling Machines, Rangemaster Milling Machines, Plain Milling Machines, and more.
